India Watches US-Russia Talks about  Tariff

The Indian government is closely monitoring the developments between the United States and Russia, hoping the two sides can settle their differences over Ukraine. Such a resolution could lead Donald Trump to drop — or at least delay — the proposed 25% tariff hike on Indian exports, which is currently set to take effect on August 27.

But if New Delhi was expecting a breakthrough from the Alaska summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the outcome was underwhelming. No final deal was reached, leaving India in a state of uncertainty regarding its trade relationship with the US.

Still, the fact that the dialogue remains open is somewhat reassuring. Both Trump and Putin indicated that talks are moving forward, which offers some hope. As the content of the summit becomes clearer, India will need to look beyond the immediate tariff threat and consider how a potential thaw in US-Russia relations might reshape global dynamics — and impact India's own foreign policy.

Putin spoke optimistically, saying that the leaders had come to an “understanding” that could set the stage for peace in Ukraine. Trump, however, took a more cautious tone. “We’re not there yet — but we’re close,” he said, noting that only a few issues remain unresolved. “Most of them are minor, but one is quite significant,” he added, without naming the specific hurdle.
